Savannah is a very old city on very low ground, and rugs here come apart for reasons that have almost nothing to do with anyone walking on them. A garden-level room half a storey under a square, a frame house on brick piers behind Forsyth Park, and a slab in a new Pooler subdivision are all living through the same wet air in three different ways, and a house whose lawn ends at a tidal creek is living through a fourth. These are the areas we collect from most, and what tends to be waiting when we get there.

Historic District

The garden level is the whole problem.

Victorian District

These houses sit up on piers over a shallow, largely unvented crawl on sandy ground, which means the underside of the floor is the coolest surface in the building for most of the year and the air beneath it is close to saturated.

Ardsley Park

The canopy that makes these streets what they are is also what is in the rugs.

Starland

Converted commercial space is the local hazard.

Isle of Hope

Pluff mud.

Skidaway Island

Two things, and the first one surprises people.

Tybee Island

There are two different waters on this island and they do different things.

Wilmington Island

The crawlspace under a house whose garden ends at a tidal creek is the coolest surface on the property, and the air under there sits at or near saturation for a large part of the year.

Rug cleaning in Wilmington Island

Whitemarsh Island

This island sits only a few feet above the marsh, and that is enough to make ordinary tides an indoor problem.

Thunderbolt

A working river is an odour problem before it is a soil problem.

Richmond Hill

Moving and storing is what damages rugs here.

Pooler

New construction has its own damp problem and it is the opposite of the one in the old city.
