What Thunderbolt is built from
A small town on the Wilmington River at the end of Victory Drive with a genuinely working waterfront — shrimp boats, docks and marine yards — and Bonaventure Cemetery on the bluff above it. Older cottages and bungalows close to the water, low streets between them, and marsh at the ends of most of them.
Long-established local families, households who work on the water, and people who came for the river. Smaller rooms, older houses, and rugs that are used rather than preserved.
The Thunderbolt problem
A working river is an odour problem before it is a soil problem. Diesel, shrimp, creek mud and marsh gas are in the air and on the ground here, and wool absorbs odour rather than collecting it on the surface — which is why deodorising a rug from a house on this water never holds for more than a week or two. It has to come out of the fibre in the wash. Underneath that, these streets are low and they drain toward the river, so a hard rain arriving on a high tide has nowhere to go and backs up into ground-floor rooms; and a hundred-year-old cottage on this ground has a crawlspace only slightly above the water table under it. The combination we are usually called about is a rug that smells and a rug that has been wet, and they are the same rug.
