What Isle of Hope is built from
A bluff settlement on the Skidaway River with Bluff Drive running along the water: nineteenth-century cottages, later infill on the streets behind, and Wormsloe's oak avenue at the end of the road. Almost everything here is within walking distance of a dock, a landing or the marsh itself.
Long-established households, boats, and dogs that go where the boats go. Rooms are used and lived in rather than kept for show, and there is constant traffic between the water and the house.
The Isle of Hope problem
Pluff mud. The mud in these tidal creeks is fine grey-black silt loaded with organic matter and sulphur — the smell every household here already knows — and the tide uncovers acres of it twice a day, a few steps from the back door. It comes in on boots, on paws and on anything that has been near a dock. Unlike sand it is not an abrasive, and treating it as one is the mistake: the particles are finer than the gaps in the weave, so they do not sit in the pile, they go through it and lodge in the foundation. Letting it dry does not solve anything either. It goes grey, powders, brushes off the surface convincingly, and then reactivates the next time the humidity climbs, because what is left behind is organic and hygroscopic. It has to be flushed out of the foundation in immersion, front and back, rather than lifted off the top.
