What Skidaway Island is built from
An island reached by a single bridge, largely built out from the early 1970s as The Landings, with the state park and the marine science campus at the north end. Low-rise houses on wooded interior lots and on marsh-front lots, on crawlspaces and on slabs, under heavy oak and pine.
Retired and semi-retired households in large numbers, a great many of whom moved here from colder and much drier parts of the country and brought their furniture with them. The rugs are frequently the good ones from the old house.
The Skidaway Island problem
Two things, and the first one surprises people. A wool rug that spent thirty years on a floor in a heated northern house arrives here carrying very little moisture, and then spends a year taking up water until it is in equilibrium with a room that sits far damper than anything it has known. That is when old stains reappear — a spill cleaned off the surface years ago wicks back up out of the foundation as the rug takes on moisture — and when old odours come back with them. Owners read it as something the movers did. The second is the marsh itself. Overnight the air over a tidal marsh saturates, and a house on a crawlspace at the edge of it pulls that air in underneath the floor. Marsh-front rooms are also the ones with the most glass and the least foot traffic, so those rugs are the dampest, the stillest and the least disturbed things in the house at once.
