What Starland is built from
The Bull Street blocks around Fortieth, named for the Starland Dairy that operated there. Turn-of-the-century workers' cottages and shotgun houses mixed in among small commercial buildings and warehouses, a good many of them converted into studios, shops, galleries and ground-floor flats.

The Starland problem
Converted commercial space is the local hazard. A ground floor built in 1915 as a store or a dairy shed is brick and concrete laid straight onto the ground, because nobody put a vapour barrier under a slab in 1915. Both materials move moisture upward all year, so a rug over that has a permanently damp underside no matter how dry the room feels, and a rug pad of solid rubber over the top of it turns a slow problem into a fast one. The second thing we find here is the unknown rug. A piece bought secondhand can carry live moth larvae in the fold, old pet contamination that has been dormant for years and only announces itself when the humidity climbs, or a previous home wash that set a stain and stripped the lanolin out of the wool. None of that is visible on the shop floor. It is all visible on the back of the rug under proper light.
