What Pooler is built from
West Chatham along the interstates and the fastest-growing part of the county: subdivisions built from the 2000s onward on slab, on ground that was flat pine and wetland before it was filled, with the airport and the interstate junction on one side of it.

A slab gives up moisture for a long time after it is poured, and a new house is sealed tightly enough that what gets in does not casually get out. Meanwhile the cooling system in a big open-plan house is generally sized for the hottest afternoon of the year, so for most of the year it satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it has taken much water out of the air — a house that is cool and still humid, which most people never think to measure. A large rug on that slab under a sectional has a damp underside and no air moving across it. Hand-tufted rugs are the worst thing to leave in that state, because they are held together by a layer of latex adhesive between the pile and the backing: damp and age break it down, and the sharp old-glue smell that produces is regularly mistaken for a pet.
